Rawabi Electric Switchboards to Ma’aden

The Saudi Arabian partner of CUBIC, Rawabi Electric, has recently finished a project for the world’s largest and most efficient vertically integrated mine-to-metal complex.

The Ma’aden Project In 1997, Ma’aden (Saudi Arabian Mining Co.) was formed following a Royal decree aiming at facilitating the development of Saudi Arabia’s mineral resources.

Ma’aden is a $ 10.8 billion joint venture formed with Alcoa. Ma’aden is today the leading mining and metals company in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with a diverse portfolio of mineral assets at various stages of development including: exploration, development and production. Ma’aden has a broad commodity focus spanning gold, zinc, low-grade bauxite, phosphate, aluminium, and industrial minerals.

The Ma’aden project comprises the world’s first fully integrated mine-to-metal complex consisting of operations and projects located across Saudi Arabia. The complex include among other five gold and base metals mines, a bauxite mine, a magnesite mine, a phosphate mine, an alumina refinery and an aluminium smelter and rolling mill.

The project’s alumina refinery, aluminum smelter and rolling mill are under construction at Ras Al Khair, 90 km North of Jubail in the eastern province.

A key infrastructure item for the aluminium operations at Ras Al Khair is a power, steam and water facility. In October 2009 Ma’aden signed an energy conversion agreement with the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) and Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) to develop a joint power and desalination plant which will generate 2400 MW of electricity and 1.025 million cubic meters of water per day. Of that, the aluminium complex will use 1,350 MW of electricity and 25,000 cubic meters per day of water. The remaining electricity and water will be supplied to the national grid.

The switchboards

It is for the massive infrastructure project, Rawabi Electric has supplied the CUBIC switchboards. The switchboards are delivered in a MPI solution, rated at 480 V AC, 65KA, 60HZ.

The switchboards are installed inside a Pre-fabricated Control room (PCR), which is a specialized item manufactured Rawabi Electric.

Both switchboards are with Air circuit breakers as incomer. One switchboard includes an Automatic Transfer System for incoming supply. The direct contractor is Gulf Asia and main contractor is Flour.

Rawabi Electric is one of the leading providers of power and automation solutions in Saudi Arabia and the EMA region. Rawabi Electric is an approved vendor for most of the major customers in the kingdom including a.o. Saudi Aramco, Saudi Electricity Company, Sabic, and Royal Commission.
